In this post, learn how to make Butter at home. Making homemade White Butter is very easy, and it only needs cream (malai), which forms on top of the boiled milk in the pot. You can either use the fresh cream bought from the market or make your own by collecting the Malai over a few days or weeks. Making butter at home can sound difficult, but it is not only very simple, but tastes better than the alternative available in the market. Also, the homemade butter can be used to make Ghee, and you also get other products in the process, such as Butter Milk. The pure, fresh, white butter, or “Makhan” as it is called in Hindi, is also free of any preservatives.
This Homemade White Butter Recipe shows the traditional yet easy way to make Makhan at home from cream(malai), which was collected from two liters of milk over a week. Following this recipe, you can easily make Makhan at home and use it in your toast and other dishes for a flavorful taste.

Ingredients for making White Butter
- Malai – made from 8 liters of milk and stored for over 1 week. You can also check out the Homemade Malai Recipe to make thick Malai. You can also use Thick cream, having high milk fat content, available in the market if you don’t have the patience to collect cream.
- 10-12 Ice cubes
- 2 cups of Cold water

How to Make Butter at Home
1. To make butter at home, we need Malai. This is homemade Malai, made from milk in just one week.

2. Add the Malai to a grinding jar.

3. Add 10-12 ice cubes to the jar.

4. Add 1/2 cup of water to the jar.

5. Blend for 30 seconds, then add 1 cup cold water.

6. Blend for 30 seconds again. This time, you will see that the butter separates from the liquid and rises to the top.

7. Take a chunk of Makhan and give it a round shape while squeezing out the excess liquid. This liquid is known as Chaas. You can check out the recipe for simple Chaas and Masala Chaas.

8. Transfer it to a bowl filled with cold water and ice cubes.

9. Wash the butter properly. Bring the butter together, squeeze out the excess liquid or Chaas.

10. Take a butter paper. Spread the butter on it and give it any shape that you want. I’ll give them a square block shape as it is most preferred.

Fold the paper from all sides. Place it in a container to put in the refrigerator for half an hour, to let it set.

After refrigerating for half an hour, the Makhan is finally set.

Cut the block into any shape you like and serve with toast. Enjoy!
