Homemade air fryer banana chips deliver all the crunch and rich flavor of traditional deep-fried snacks with significantly less oil. We’ve all been there: it’s 4:00 PM, your energy starts to dip, and the intense craving for something crunchy, salty, and satisfying takes over. For years, traditional Kerala banana chips were my ultimate go-to snack. They have that irresistible crunch and rich flavor that store-bought potato chips just can’t match. However, standard banana chips come with a major downside—they are almost always deep-fried in vast quantities of heavy oil, turning a naturally wholesome fruit into a calorie-dense splurge.
In this straightforward recipe, I’ll prove that you don’t need a heavy vat of boiling oil to achieve that signature golden crunch. By leveraging the power of an air fryer, you can make perfectly crispy, seasoned banana chips at home using just a single tablespoon of healthy oil.
Whether you’re looking to improve your afternoon snacking habits, pack healthier lunchboxes, or serve a delicious appetizer at your next gathering, this recipe is a complete game-changer. Let’s dive into everything you need to know to master homemade air fryer banana chips.

Banana Chips Ingredients
Simplicity is key here. You only need a few staple ingredients to pull this off:
- Raw Green Bananas (Plantains): 500g (Choose thick, small, firm, unripened green bananas for the best crunch).
- Olive Oil: 1 tablespoon (Heart-healthy and great for crisping).
- Salt: To taste (Added before air frying to draw out extra moisture).
- Kashmiri Red Chili Powder: To taste (Provides a rich red color and gentle warmth without overpowering heat).
- Chaat Masala: To taste (Adds that iconic tangy, savory punch at the end).
How To Make Banana Chips in Air Fryer
1. Prep the Raw Bananas:
Thoroughly wash 500 g of firm, raw green bananas under cold running water to remove surface dirt and sap residue.

Pat them completely dry using a clean kitchen towel. Trim and discard both end tips of each banana.

2. Peel and Slice:
Carefully peel the green outer skin using a standard paring knife or peeler.

Over a large tray, use a mandoline or vegetable slicer to cut the bananas into uniform rounds.

Aim for medium thickness—slices that are too thin will burn easily, while slices that are too thick will turn out soft rather than crunchy.

3. Oil and Seasoning Coat:
Transfer the sliced bananas into a large mixing bowl. Add 1 tbsp of olive oil and 2 tsp of salt.

Toss gently until every slice is lightly and evenly coated with oil and salt.
4. Air Fry in Batches: Avoid overcrowding for maximum crispiness.
Preheat your air fryer to 160°C. Arrange the banana slices in a single layer inside the air-fryer basket, ensuring they do not overlap.

Air fry at 160°C for 9 to 10 minutes, shaking or flipping the basket halfway through.

If you prefer extra crunch, extend the cooking time by an additional 1 to 2 minutes while monitoring closely.

5. Final Seasoning and Serving:
Transfer the hot, crispy banana chips into a dry bowl. Immediately sprinkle Kashmiri red chili powder and chaat masala to taste.

Toss well so the spices adhere to the warm chips. Allow them to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Pro Tips for Maximum Crunch
- Pick the Right Bananas: Make sure your bananas are completely green and firm to the touch. If the banana has started to ripen or soften, the sugar content will be too high, causing the chips to go limp or burn instead of getting crispy.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Air fryers work by circulating hot air rapidly around food. If the banana slices overlap too much, steam gets trapped, resulting in chewy chips. Laying them out evenly in a single layer makes all the difference.
- Storage: Allow the banana chips to cool down completely to room temperature before storing. Place them in a dry, airtight container. They will stay fresh and crunchy for up to a week!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Can I use yellow (ripe) bananas for this recipe?
No, yellow bananas contain a higher sugar and water content. When air-fried, they soften and caramelize rather than turning crispy, resulting in soggy or burnt chips. Always choose thick, dark green raw bananas or plantains.
2. Why are my banana chips soggy instead of crispy?
Sogginess usually happens for three reasons:
- The slices were too thick or unevenly sliced.
- The air fryer basket was overcrowded, causing the slices to steam instead of fry.
- They were not air-fried long enough (add 1–2 extra minutes at 160°C if needed).
3. Do I need to soak the banana slices in turmeric or salt water first?
Soaking in salt-turmeric water is a popular traditional method for deep-frying to add yellow color and crispness. However, for this air-fryer version inspired by Aayansh Kitchen, a simple dry toss with oil and salt saves time and delivers excellent crispness without extra moisture.
4. How long do air-fried banana chips stay crunchy?
When stored in a clean, airtight glass or plastic container at room temperature, these chips retain their crunch for up to 7 to 10 days. Ensure they are completely cool before sealing the lid to prevent condensation.
