  • 1 tbsp chopped almonds
  • 1 tbsp raisins
  • 1/2 liter of Full-fat Milk
  • 1 tsp Green cardamom powder
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • Garnish with Desi ghee, chopped nuts & dry fruits.

How To Make Moong Dal Halwa

1. To make Moong Dal Halwa at home, first take 1 cup of Dhuli Moong Dal. This is the same dal used to make Khichdi.

2. Now, pour water in the bowl and wash the Dal properly 3-4 times.

3. Now, soak the Dal in water and cover the bowl with a lid. Keep it aside for 4 hours.

4. After 4 hours, check the Dal. You can see that the Dal has almost doubled in quantity as it has swelled after soaking.

5. Place a fine sieve over a bowl. Pour the dal over and sieve it properly to remove any excess moisture.

6. Now, add the Dal to a grinder and grind it without adding any water. In between, you can mix with a spoon and grind again until you achieve the thick paste-like texture shown below.

7. Now, let’s make the Halwa. Take a Kadai or a pan and pour 1/2 cup of desi ghee. Don’t turn on the flame yet.

8. Now, add the Mung Dal Paste to the Kadai, and turn on the flame.

9. Now, mix and stir the mixture, then roast it on a low flame. Roasting the Halwa takes more than 30 minutes, so be prepared.

10. In the meantime, take a small bowl and mix a few saffron strands into the milk. Keep it aside so that while we roast the Halwa, it also leaves the flavor.

11. Now, you can see that, after mixing and roasting for a few minutes, the mixture has spread well and there are no large lumps. However, if lumps occur, you can turn off the flame and grind the mixture to a smooth consistency.

12. Here, roasting for a few more minutes, the mixture has become fine and granular in texture, and the color has changed to light brown.

13. Now, add 1 tbsp chopped cashews and almonds, and also some kishmish. Mix the mixture and roast them together.

14. As you can see below, Dal and nuts have roasted well; you need to roast them till they get the color as shown below. You will also learn how long to roast, as it releases a lovely aroma.

15. Now, turn off the flame, mix for a minute, and then add 1/2 liter of Full-fat Milk.

16. After adding the milk, turn on the flame, and add a tsp of Green cardamom powder.

17. Next, add the saffron milk that we kept aside.

18. Now, stir and mix well, then roast the mixture on low to medium heat until it has absorbed the milk.

19. As the mixture thickens, add 1 cup of Sugar. Stir and mix well. After adding the Sugar, the mixture will become slightly thinner again. We need to stir continuously now.

20. As we continue to stir, the mixture will thicken.

21. We need to stir and roast the Halwa until it reaches the perfect thick consistency and starts to leave the Pan.
