Tornado Potato is a very popular street food, which is also commonly known as potato twister or potato spiral. In India, it is also known as Spring potato, Potato on a stick, Stick Potatoes, Potato chips on a stick, and Tornado Fries. To make them, potatoes are cut into a spiral shape, skewered on a bamboo stick or skewer, and then dipped in a batter that is mainly made from all-purpose flour, corn flour, and spices. These spiral-cut potatoes are then deep-fried until golden brown and served with seasonings. It gives them a unique flavor that can be easily customized as per your preferences.

Potato Twister Recipe Ingredients

  • 3 Medium-sized Potatoes that are uniform in size. The potatoes are not peeled for appeal and texture.
  • Water
  • 1/2 cup Maida
  • 1/2 cup Cornflour
  • 1 tsp crushed Black pepper
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Dhaniya powder
  • 2 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Aamchur Powder
  • Oil for frying
  • Peri Peri masala
  • Mayonnaise
  • Mix of tomato ketchup with Mayonnaise

How To Make a Tornado Potato

1. To make Potato Spiral or Potato Twister at home, take 3 medium-sized potatoes. Properly wash and dry them.

2. Now, insert a long bamboo stick or a wooden skewer through the exact centre of the potato to ensure an even cut.

3. Take a sharp knife and keep it diagonally, cutting a continuous spiral around the potato. Make sure to rotate the potato as you cut and do not cut all the way through. For more, you can check the video.

4. Now, gently stretch or fan out the potato spirals apart along the stick or skewer. 

5. Take cold water in a bowl and put the Potato Spiral in the water to prevent it from getting dark, and remove excess starch to achieve a crispier potato tornado. Put it aside.

6. Take a mixing bowl, add 1/2 cup Maida, 1/2 cup Cornflour, 1 tsp crushed Black pepper, salt to taste, 1 tsp Dhaniya powder, 2 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder, and 1 tsp Aamchur Powder. Mix well.

7. Add water gradually to prepare a slightly thick and runny batter.

8. Coat the Potato Spirals with the batter.

9. Heat oil in a Kadai on medium heat. Deep fry the Spirals on low to medium heat until they turn crispy and golden brown.

10. Season with Peri Peri masala, mayonnaise, and a mix of tomato ketchup with Mayonnaise, which tastes delicious and makes the popular street snack so unique, popular, and flavorful.
